The University of Illinois-Chicago tallied 16 hits in each game of Saturday's twin bill at Buysse Ballpark as the Flames and Titans opened up their three-game weekend series, and Detroit was unable to keep pace, falling 14-0 and 12-0.
Senior
Jessica Liebner (Ortonville, MI/Brandon) recorded the Titans' lone hit of the doubleheader, a single to right field to lead off the second inning in game one. She then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman right fielder
Katie Schaus (Unionville, MI/Unionville-Sebewaing Area), but was stranded after a groundout to shortstop ended the frame.
After Liebner's base hit, only one other Titan managed to reach base in the opening game, as junior second baseman
Stefanie Morong (Ludington, MI/Mason County Central) drew a two-out walk in the third.
Freshman
Anna Bondy (Newport, MI/Carleton-Airport) started both games in the circle for Detroit (3-33, 0-20 Horizon League), making her 22nd and 23rd starts of the season. Bondy started off strong in game one, allowing just one hit and no runs in her first two innings of work. But the Flames managed to strike in the third, scoring three runs behind four hits. In the fourth inning UIC (20-31, 13-7 Horizon League) doubled their lead, making it 6-0. Poised to add on again in the fifth with the bases loaded and just one out, Bondy struck out third baseman Coryn Schmit and then got pinch-hitter Kelsey Sturgeon to hit a weak grounder to second base to end the inning.
But the Flames weren't done, pounding six hits and adding eight runs in the top of the sixth and extending their lead to 14-0.
Bondy tied her career-high with four strikeouts in game one and stranded six UIC runners on base in six innings of work. The rookie hurler returned to the circle to begin game two, but was replaced before being able to record an out as the Flames stormed out to a 3-0 lead. Sophomore
Kara Spinelli (Newman, CA/Orestimba) came on in relief, striking out a pair of batters and allowing nine runs in a five innings.
UDM's offense was unable to figure out UIC starter Ashley Hewett in game two, failing to tally a hit, and reaching base only once, as senior catcher
Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Unionville-Sebewaing Area) made it to first on a sharp grounder the Flames' shortstop was unable to handle.
Detroit will take another shot at the Flames as the weekend series concludes at Buysse Ballpark Sunday with a single game beginning at noon.
