Softball Downed By Loyola In Series Opener

Box Score

Senior Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Unionville-Sebewaing Area) homered and sophomore pitcher Kara Spinelli (Newman, CA/Orestimba) gave up just four earned runs, but the Titans saw Loyola take game one of the weekend series, 9-1, on Saturday afternoon.

The Titans' lone run came in the fourth as Houthoofd connected on her second long ball of the season, a two-out solo blast to left to get Detroit within three, 4-1. In the fifth, the Titans rallied as freshman Katie Schaus (Unionville, MI/Unionville-Sebewaing Area) had a one-out single. Then, with two down, senior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) worked a walk to bringing the tying run to the plate, but Detroit was not able to get that key hit to get any closer.

Loyola got on the board first with three runs in their home half of the first inning followed by another run in the third. The Ramblers took a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth and secured the win with a three-run double to end the game.

Spinelli allowed nine runs, four earned, giving up 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings. She also walked just one batter and struck out three. Offensively, sophomore Rachel Copple (Dearborn Hts., MI/Allen Park Cabrini) also had a base knock on the day.

Detroit will end the regular season tomorrow when UDM and Loyola meet up for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
