The University of Detroit Mercy softball team concluded its 2010 season Sunday afternoon in Chicago with a doubleheader against Loyola in which the Titans fell 19-0 in game one and 4-0 in game two.

After pitching in the Titans' loss to the Ramblers Saturday, sophomore Kara Spinelli (Newman, CA/Orestimba) returned to pitch in game two Sunday. Despite four Detroit errors, Spinelli held the Ramblers to four runs and seven hits in six innings of work. Senior left fielder Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) gave Spinelli a helping hand in the field. With two out and a runner on third in the first inning, a fly ball off the bat of Ellen Kresl was fielded by Mulroy who then threw out Bridget Lally at the plate.

After allowing a single run in the first, Spinelli, who struck out three, held Loyola off the board and with only one hit through the second, third and fourth. But the Ramblers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the fifth without recording a hit. Jacqueline Grim drew a leadoff walk for Loyola, and pinch-runner Stevie Bradich made her way to third with the help of a throwing error after stealing second. First baseman Kristen Medrud then drove Bradich in with a sacrifice fly to left field. In the sixth, Loyola plated a pair of insurance runs with the help a UDM mishap.

Three Titans recorded hits in the loss. Junior second baseman Stefanie Morong (Ludington, MI/Mason County Central) recorded the only extra-base hit for either team, roping a double down the line to left, but was caught in a rundown between second and third when the next batter, sophomore Renee Zaccagni (Macomb, MI/Dakota), hit a sharp grounder to third. Senior first baseman Jessica Liebner (Ortonville, MI/Brandon) tallied a single to right in the fourth, and freshman Katie Schaus (Unionville, MI/Unionville-Sebewaing Area) singled back to the pitcher with two outs in the seventh, but was unable to spark a late Titan rally. Schaus and senior catcher Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Unionville-Sebewaing Area) each drew walks to give Detroit runners as well.

The Ramblers added to the scoreboard in all four innings of their game one victory over UDM. They staked themselves out to the lead with a solo run in the first inning off of freshman pitcher Anna Bondy (Carleton, MI/Carleton-Airport), who went the distance in the circle. Loyola added another four before an eight-hit, 11-run third inning extended the lead to 16-0.

The final tally for the Ramblers was 17 hits, including six for extra bases. The Titans committed two fielding errors, leading to one Loyola run. Offensively, Zaccagni was responsible for Detroit's lone hit, a single to right in the third. The Titans also received a pair of well-hit fly balls deep to left field from Liebner and Mulroy, but Rambler outfielder Stephanie Cihlar corralled both with her back to the fence. Liebner and Mulroy also accounted for UDM's other two base runners, drawing one walk apiece.

Sunday marked the final games in Detroit uniforms for seniors Mulroy, Houthoofd and Liebner, who were honored in front of their home fans during their final contest at Buysse Ballpark on Tuesday.
