Women's Soccer Plays To 1-1 Draw At San Diego State

(BOX SCORE)

Freshman Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) scored her second goal of the season late in regulation as the Detroit Titans (2-1-1) played to a 1-1 draw on the road against the San Diego State Aztecs (1-3-1).

McCollum took a pass from Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, ON/St. Ignatius) and then took a shot that went in the lower left-hand corner of the goal at 84:11 of the second half. Alyssa Korson (Suttons Bay, MI/Lake Leelanau St. Mary's) was also credited with an assist on the play.

San Diego tied it late at 86:01 to push the game into overtime and two extra sessions could not produce a winner.

“I thought we did well and our back line really held its own against a solid team that was in the NCAA Tournament last year,” said head coach Mike Lupenec. “Nora (Abolins) made some big saves for us. She made two near the end that should have been goals.”

In a scoreless first half, freshman goalkeeper Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) only had to make two saves for the Titans. Abolins finished with six saves on seven shots at the end of regulation and ten saves overall. Detroit was outshot a combined 8-0 in overtime with only four of those on net.

The Titans had three corner kicks in the opening session, one of which was Korson's header that went just left of the net.

“I'm pleased with the direction of the team compared to where we were last year at this point. We are healthy and playing like it is October and we have a few games before conference play starts,” said Lupenec.

The Titans will close out their West Coast trip at Pepperdine on Sunday afternoon.  Game time is set for  4:00 p.m., (EST).
