DEKALB, Ill. -- Sophomore
Lindsey Lammers (Milan, MI/Milan) dominated the field by shooting a one-under 72 - which included an eagle on the eighth hole -to win her first collegiate title as the NIU Huskie Classic came to an end on Monday.
“She really had everything going and it was fun to watch,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “She was hitting the ball great and really played her irons well. She would have been about five or six under if she had some more putts fall for her.”
The Titans took 14 strokes off their round one score by shooting a 325 to finish in third with a 664, just behind Loyola's 657. SIU Edwardsville won the event with a 646.
The story for Detroit was Lammers who came into the final round tied for eighth, but then caught fire recording her career-best 72 in the second round to move right up the leader board ending with a 154 (82, 72). Lammers topped the field with a two-over 4.11 average on par 4's and was among the tournament leaders with 18 pars and four birdies. It was also her fifth top-10 effort topping her runner-up mark at the IPFW Spring Classic last spring.
Junior
Collette Hansen (West Olive, MI/Grand Haven) posted her fourth career top-10 finish by sharing ninth with a 163 (83, 80). Hansen had a team-high 19 pars in the two-day event and was in the top 10 in par 4's with a 4.39 average.
Freshman
Olivia Richards (Waterford, Ontario/Simcoe Compostie) concluded her first collegiate tournament with a top 20 appearance tying for 12th with a 164 (79, 85). In her first action of the fall, Richards posted 18 pars and four birdies and was in the top 10 in the field in par 4 (4.39) and par 3 (3.38) scoring.
“I thought Collette played well and Olivia gave a great effort in her debut,” added Ryan.
Senior
Liz Zouzal (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) ended in the top 30 carding a 170 (84, 86) to tie for 26th place, while sophomore
Christina Thorne (Kingston, ON/Bayridge) earned the Huskie Classic Sportsmanship Award.
“The greens were really tough, but the team played through that,” said Ryan. “We did some good things and now it's time to come home and play strong at our tournament.”
UDM will have a few days off before returning to the links by hosting the Detroit Titans Fall Classic this weekend, Oct. 8-9, at the Hartland Glen Golf Club. The two-round event will begin on Saturday and end on Sunday with the Titans facing Marygrove, Oakland, UIC and Waterloo (ON).
