Postgame Interview With Head Coach Matt Holtz
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Detroit Titans gave Ohio State all it could handle, but a late Buckeyes' goal was the difference as UDM was upended by OSU, 4-3, on Thursday night from the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex.
“It was a phenomenal effort from our guys, but they just made one more play then we did,” said head coach
Matt Holtz. “We came out and worked hard and obviously showed improvement, but it still hurts to lose any game.”
The game was tied at 3-all heading into the fourth quarter, but after the Titans (0-2) seventh turnover in the period, OSU's (1-0) Tyler Dolphin was able to bet the game winner with 4:44 left in the contest.
Ohio State got on the board first with a goal just 1:13 into the game, but Detroit roared back with two of its own to jump out in front, 2-1. Senior
Matt Gregson (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic) got Detroit's offense started with his second goal of the season and that was followed by a score from junior
Tim Lehto (Farmington, MI/North Farmington).
Detroit's defense played tough all game, holding Ohio State scoreless for the rest of the first period and through a majority of the second before the Buckeyes tied the game on a man-up goal.
OSU struck first in the third to take a 3-2 advantage, but freshman
Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook), knotted things up again tallying his first collegiate goal with 1:16 left in the quarter.
Sophomore #A.J. Levell# (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto), playing just 15 minutes away from where he grew up, starred in net making eight saves on the day. The Titan defense was led by sophomore's
Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary) and
Jamie Hebden (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice), who both caused three turnovers. On the night, Detroit's defense forced 26 Ohio State miscues.
“The defense really played well and we got a great effort from
John Dwyer and
Nick Garippa,” said Holtz. “A.J. was fired up. It was his day. He played really well and it was the best I have ever seen him play.”
Detroit will stay on the road as it heads to Louisville, KY, on Saturday to battle the Knights of Bellarmine. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. Fans can catch all the action with live stats and live video, with the links located on the schedule page.
Game Notes:
The Titans lost their inaugural game at Ohio State, 21-1, in 2009…The 23 shots by Ohio State was the second fewest allowed by Detroit in its short history just three more than Presbyterian got off in 2010…UDM did not have an assist in the game for just the second time in school history as they had no helpers on its four goals at Quinnipiac in 2009.
