COLLEGE PARK, MD -- A pair of early Detroit goals had Detroit thinking upset, but a second period run by No. 4 Maryland was too much for the Titans to overcome as UDM fell, 16-4, on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.

It was the season opener for Maryland, who advanced all the way to the NCAA quarterfinals last year.

Detroit (0-4) got on the board first nearly eight minutes into the game taking advantage of a Maryland 3-minute penalty for illegal equipment. First, sophomore Chris Nemes (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central) took a pass from freshman Wes Steen (Columbus, OH/Olentangy Liberty) and put one past Terps' goalie Niko Amato. Just over a minute later, freshman Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) notched his second marker of the year to give the red, white and blue a 2-0 lead.

The Titans did their best to keep Maryland at bay, holding the Terrapins scoreless until the 3:06 mark in the first period. Detroit kept the Terps off the scoreboard for the rest of the first quarter, but Maryland struck for seven second period goals, and 10-straight overall, to push its advantage to 10-2.

Freshman Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) broke the run with an unassisted goal in the third, while the Titans final tally came from senior Matt Gregson (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic) in the fourth.

Sophomore Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary) picked up a team-high four ground balls, while sophomore Jamie Hebden (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice), freshman Nick Garippa (Rochester Hills, MI/Notre Dame Prep) and Adams collected three apiece.

Sophomore goalie #A.J. Levell# (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) made eight saves in 52 minutes before giving way to freshman Danny Kransberger (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central), who made his collegiate debut playing the final eight minutes in net.

Maryland outshot Detroit, 36-17, and held a big advantage in ground balls, 49-23, but UDM did manage to force 17 Terps' turnovers. Nine Terrapins scored on the day, led by hat tricks from Joe Cummings and Ryan Young.

The Titans will finally play in front of their home fans next Saturday as Detroit hosts Mercer at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m., and tickets can only be purchased at the gate on game day. Tickets for the home opener are set at $10 for adults (18 and over) and $7 for all students (with proper ID) and children.

Game Notes:
It was the Titans second game against a ranked opponent, as well as an ACC school, as Detroit lost to No. 4 North Carolina, 19-4, in 2009…Maryland had 14 assists on its 16 goals, the most against the Titans since Bellarmine had 16 in 2009…Kransberger picked up two ground balls in his first action of the season…After playing their first four games on the road, Detroit will play four of its next five at home…Three of Adams' team-leading six goals have been with the man-up…The Titans were whistled for a season-high six penalties…
