Titans Earn Third Split at Rebel Games

Manhattan Box Score
Wagner Box Score

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - On the second last day of action in Florida, the Titans split their games for the third time in four days of play. Detroit is now 3-5 on the year after falling 9-1 in five innings to Manhattan in the first contest and following that with a 3-2 victory over Wagner.

In the first game against Manhattan, freshman Shelby Long (St. Peters, MO/Fort Zumwalt) doubled her way to second base and another freshman Karyn McCarty (Allen Park, MI/Cabrini) cashed her in with an RBI single for the lone Titan run. In the 9-1 defeat, McCarty and sophomore Anna Bondy (Newport, MI/Carleton-Airport) handled the pitching duties for Detroit.

In the second contest facing Wagner, Detroit fell behind 1-0 in the second inning on an opposing RBI single. The Seahawks posted another single tally in the fourth before the Titans tied it in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of runs. McCarty singled to get on base and after Long drew a walk, each runner moved up a base on a passed ball. Freshman Alyssa Gietl (Plymouth, MI/Ladywood) walked to load the bases and a fielding error allowed both McCarty and Long to score for Detroit.

Another run in the fifth was the eventual winning run for the Titans. Junior Rachel Copple (Dearborn Heights, MI/Cabrini) singled to lead off the frame and freshman Erin Huddleston (Normal, IL/Normal West) followed that with a base knock of her own. Fellow freshman Sara Cupp (Hartland, MI/Milford) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt bringing Long to the plate with an RBI opportunity. Long would reach base on a fielder's choice and earn an RBI after scoring Copple.

Freshman Julia Maksym (Manistee, MI/Manistee) was in the pitching circle for the Titans and improved to 1-2 on the season. Maksym went the distance allowing seven hits and striking out one for her first collegiate victory.

Detroit will finish play at the Rebel Spring games on Saturday against Sacred Heart and Lafayette. The first game is set for 9:00 a.m, while the second will begin after at 11:00 a.m.
