Game 2
VALPARAISO, Ind.-- The Detroit Titan softball team suffered a pair of defeats in doubleheader action at Valparaiso Saturday to open Horizon League play for both teams. Valpo broke open a late 2-0 game in the opener to post an 8-0 win followed by a 10-0 victory in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
VU (17-10, 2-0) got on the board first, plating an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. After
Karyn McCarty retired the next nine Crusaders in order, VU tacked-on another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Kelsey Phelan.
The fifth inning proved to be a big one for the Crusaders as they scored six in the frame to end the game. After a leadoff homer, Valpo scratched across five more, three unearned, to end the opener in five innings.
McCarty took the loss in the circle, allowing five earned while striking-out six for Detroit (4-10, 0-2).
GAME TWO
Katelyn Steffel started off the game on the right foot with a base knock to right field. A successful sacrifice and another groundout moved her to third, but she would be stranded there and Valpo escaped damage.
VU scored two in the first and recorded four in each of the second and third innings, taking a quick lead in game two.
Steffel and
Erin Huddleston each had hits in game two.
The teams will finish-off the three-game series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. Eastern first pitch.
