DETROIT – Junior
Rachel Copple (Dearborn Heights, MI/Cabrini) went a combined 4-6 at the plate with a walk and three runs scored on the day as Detroit fell in both ends of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon to Eastern Michigan. Copple now leads the team with a .368 average through 17 games.
In game two, Detroit (4-13, 0-3 Horizon League) put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but it was not enough as the Titans fell 8-0 in six innings in game one and 15-7 in the second match-up to the Eagles (13-5).
Copple went 3-3 with a walk and three runs scored in game two while freshman
Erin Huddleston (Normal, IL/Normal West) hit a two-run blast in the third inning of game two.
In the opener, junior
Whitney Stratton (Muskegon, MI/Fruitport) and Copple were the lone Titans with hits as Copple doubled in the two-hole for Detroit in the bottom of the first and Stratton led off the third with a single down the left field line.
Eastern Michigan plated one run in the second and added two more in the third. A four-run fifth and a final run in the sixth would complete the scoring in game one.
Freshman
Katelyn Steffel (Defiance, OH/Defiance) made the play of the game in the sixth inning manning the hot corner. On a ground ball shot down the third base line, Steffel dove to her right to get the ball. She picked herself up and then made the throw to first in time for the out.
In game two, the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first but the Titans responded in the home half of the frame as freshman
Shelby Long (St. Peters, MO/Fort Zumwalt) singled to the right side of the field that scored Copple from third. Copple drew a walk to reach base and freshman
Sara Cupp (Hartland, MI/Milford) laced a double to left center that moved Copple to third.
Eastern Michigan would add two more in the second and three more in the third before Detroit plated two runs in the third on Huddleston's second home run of the year and now has a team-best nine RBI.
The Eagles added another single run in the sixth before an eight-run seventh put Detroit in a 15-3 hole. Of the 15 Eastern Michigan runs, two were earned as Detroit committed five errors.
Despite the score, the Titans would not roll over showing the kind of resiliency that true quality teams possess. The Titan seventh started with Copple's fourth hit of the afternoon and the next four Detroit batters all reached first. Cupp and Huddleston walked and then Long was hit by the pitcher for the RBI without a swing of the bat. Junior
Renee Zaccagni (Macomb, MI/Dakota) followed that with a walk and another hitless RBI. After a pair of strikeouts, Stratton lined a double into center scoring Long and Huddleston but Zaccagni was thrown out at home to end the four-run frame.
The Titans will now head to Wayne State on Thursday for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
