DETROIT-- A pair of Detroit rallies fell short in doubleheader softball action at Wayne State Thursday afternoon in non-conference play. The Titans fell 8-6 in the opener after a four-run seventh inning and dropped game two, 3-2, in eight innings.
GAME ONE
Detroit (4-15) fell victim to five errors in the first game, allowing three unearned tallies as the home team took advantage. Wayne State (14-12) scored single runs in each of the first three innings and plated two in the fourth and fifth with another in the sixth to grab an 8-2 lead heading into the final frame. Detroit rallied in the top of the seventh, posting a four-spot and had the winning run at the plate during the final out.
In that final inning, the first five Titans all reached base safely before a single out was recorded. A bases-loaded single from
Rachel Copple plated the first run and another came around on a wild pitch. Two more scored on an RBI knock by
Sara Cupp and a fielding error by the leftfielder. WSU got the final out it needed with a runner at first the end the rally and the game.
The Titans rapped-out a season-high 14 hits in the opener with eight Detroit batters garnering at least one hit.
Katelyn Steffel went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI from the leadoff spot.
Julia Maksym suffered the loss, throwing four innings and allowing three earned runs.
Erin Huddleston came on in relief to pitch the final two innings, allowing a pair of earned runs while scattering five hits.
GAME TWO
The nightcap was a pitcher's dual with both hurlers keeping their opposing offenses in check. WSU grabbed a single run in the home half of the first inning and that score stood until all the way to the final inning.
Erin Huddleston hammered a 1-1 pitch over the right-centerfield fence to tie the score and help send the game to extra innings.
In the top half of the eighth,
Whitney Stratton laced a ball down the left-field line to score the runner as Detroit took the lead, 2-1. WSU answered in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Rebecca Ryan and later got the game winner on a one-out single with the bases loaded.
Anna Bondy got 16 ground ball outs over 7.1 innings and shrunk her ERA by nearly a run-and-a-half. It was pitch No. 101 on the night the proved to be walk-off hit the home team needed as a bases loaded single scored the game's final run.
Huddleston and Stratton each drove in a run in game No. 2, part of four Detroit hits.
The Titans return to league play Saturday to start a five-game homestand. Detroit welcomes Butler for a three-game series, followed by a non-conference doubleheader against Canisius. Saturday's doubledip with the Bulldogs gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
