Game one
Game two
DETROIT-- A young, scrappy Titan team nearly completed an enormous comeback in game two, but Butler hung-on for a pair of wins in a Horizon League doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark. Trailing 7-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning in the nightcap, Detroit (4-17, 0-5 HL) used the long ball to get right back into it.
Whitney Stratton hit a two-out solo job to centerfield in the fourth inning for the first run and a walk a batter later chased Bulldog starter Breanna Fisher before she could get out of the frame. Although Leah Bry got the final out of that inning, the Titans jumped all over her in the next inning. After an out to leadoff the frame, four straight Detroit batters reached, culimating in
Alyssa Gietl's grand slam to inch the home team within a single run to force BU to go to the bullpen again.
The rally started on
Erin Huddleston's single up the middle and another single from
Shelby Long.
Renee Zaccagni walked to pack the sacks and Gietl picked an opportune time for her first homer of the season, sending a ball beyond the right-centerfield wall and subsequently the Titan faithful into a frenzy.
The Bulldogs (15-11, 3-1) tacked on a run in the top of the next frame to squelch the momentum and grab some insurance. Butler's Jennifer Chasteen, who won the opener, came on to pitch the final 2.2 innings to earn wins in both ends of the doubledip as BU took game two, 8-6.
Detroit amassed seven hits in game two, all coming off the bat of different players.
In game one, Chasteen allowed just two hits in five innings and Bry pitched the final inning as BU took the game, 9-0 in six innings. Her teammates staked her to a 4-0 lead in the second inning and the Dogs scored single runs in the fourth and fifth before a three-run six to take the victory.
Sara Cupp, Huddleston and Stratton all had hits in the opener.
Anna Bondy threw all six innings, giving up nine hits and striking out four.
The teams will finish its three-game series, weather permitting, on Sunday with a single contest beginning at noon at Buysse Ballpark. Check detroittitans.com for weather-related announcements regarding potential delays.
Notes: Rachel Copple was plunked once each game and now has a team-leading 10 hit-by-pitches on the season ... Stratton and Gietl's homers give the Titans eight on the year (six different players) ... Stratton extended her team-leading hitting streak to eight straight with hits in each game ... Huddleston and Cupp each have five-game hitting streaks as well.
