Milwaukee Road Trip Begins With Pair of Losses

Game 2 Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- A first game rally and a close second game resulted in a pair of strong efforts from Detroit (5-29, 0-12 Horizon League) against Green Bay (15-18, 2-10, Horizon League) Saturday afternoon. The Titans fell 18-6 in six innings in the opener and dropped a close 4-2 decision in the second of three games to be played at Alverno College.

Down 7-1 in the opener, seven Detroit runs crossed the plate in the Titan-sixth as six hits and three Phoenix errors led to a comeback attempt.

The first four Detroit batters of the sixth inning reached base as freshman Sara Cupp (Hartland, MI/Milford) hit a RBI single to left to bring the first run home. With Cupp on first and junior Rachel Copple (Dearborn Heights, MI/Cabrini) on second, freshman Shelby Long (St. Peters, MO/Fort Zumwalt) blasted a three-run shot over the left field wall that did not return. Long now has a team-high 16 RBI.

With the score 7-5 now, the Titans continued to move around the base paths as freshman Julia Maksym (Manistee, MI/Manistee) recorded her first collegiate RBI to score junior Renee Zaccagni (Macomb, MI/Dakota) from third. Freshman Alyssa Gietl (Plymouth, MI/Ladywood) then came in on the catcher's throwing error and Copple followed that with her second single of the inning. Her hit went through the left side of the infield scoring Maksym for the seventh run of the frame. Maksym finished the opening game 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored.

As the Titans returned to the field in the bottom of the sixth, Green Bay rallied for three home runs that erased the Detroit lead. The Phoenix hit two three-run blasts and added a walk-off two-run shot to go up 16-8 and end the contest in six innings.

Copple finished 4-4 at the dish and six different Titans registered a hit in the opening contest.

In the second game, Detroit started off with the offense quickly as junior Whitney Stratton (Muskegon, MI/Fruitport) led off with her third home run of the season.

Freshman Karyn McCarty (Allen Park, MI/Cabrini) hit a solo blast in the fourth inning to go up 2-0, but Green Bay responded with a solo shot in the home half of the frame making it 2-1 Detroit.

In the fifth, the Phoenix added two more runs as a double to center scored one run from third base while a second runner, standing on second during the double, also tried to score on the play. The throw from Zaccagni in centerfield arrived in time for a collision at home plate and as Long caught the ball, the runner stepped into where Long's glove held the ball. The umpire's decision was that the Green Bay runner was safe and the Phoenix had a 3-2 lead.

A final run for the Phoenix in the sixth made it 4-2 Green Bay.

McCarty started in the circle for the Titans pitching four innings allowing two hits, two walks, and one run before passing the torch to sophomore Anna Bondy (Newport, MI/Carleton-Airport) who pitched the final two innings for Detroit punching out three Phoenix batters.

Detroit will conclude its road trip in Milwaukee Sunday with one contest set for noon (EST).
