Game 3 Box Score
MILWAUKEE – Freshman Karyn McCarty (Allen Park, MI/Cabrini) went 1-2 with a RBI triple in the first inning as the Titan softball squad closed out its regular season road schedule with a 13-6 loss to Green Bay (18-18, 5-10 Horizon League) Sunday afternoon at Alverno College in Milwaukee.
Detroit (5-30, 0-13 Horizon League) got on the board early with two runs in the top of the first. McCarty's triple scored junior Rachel Copple (Dearborn Heights, MI/Cabrini) after Copple placed a single up the middle to get on base. McCarty then came into score on a passed ball helping the team jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Five Phoenix runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the third gave the home team an 8-2 lead heading into the fourth inning.
Detroit took four runs back in that fourth as McCarty led off the frame with a walk and freshman Sara Cupp (Hartland, MI/Milford) singled through the right side to put runners on first and second with no outs. Junior Renee Zaccagni (Macomb, MI/Dakota) followed that with a high chopper that bounced right in front of the plate and up in the air that gave her enough time to beat out the throw for the third Titan run. RBI groundouts from freshmen Alyssa Gietl (Plymouth, MI/Ladywood) and Katelyn Steffel (Defiance, OH/Defiance) were sandwiched around a Green Bay error that scored another Detroit run and cut the Phoenix lead to 8-6.
In the home half of the fourth, two hits and a Detroit error allowed Green Bay to score three runs and take an 11-6 lead. A two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth made it 13-6.
McCarty is now hitting .360 (9-25) in her last 13 games having just one game in that stretch where she has not reached base. She is second on the team overall with eight extra-base hits and is also slugging a team-best .500 on the season.
The Titans will return home for the first time since Apr. 5 as Horizon League rival Wright State will head to Buysse Ballpark for a three-game series Apr. 30-May 1. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1:00 p.m., and a single contest on Sunday at noon.
