DETROIT -- The Titans (7-30, 2-13 Horizon League) swept a pair of Horizon League games Saturday afternoon over Wright State (21-26, 10-10 Horizon League) at Buysse Ballpark with a 6-5 win in the opener and a 7-6 walkoff win in the second contest.

Junior Rachel Copple's (Dearborn Heights, MI/Cabrini) RBI single over the center fielder in the bottom of the seventh in game two capped off the second Titan win in a crazy afternoon of softball.

Sophomore Anna Bondy (Newport, MI/Carleton-Airport) was in the circle and picked up two wins for Detroit pitching two complete games. Freshman Sara Cupp went 3-3 in game one with two doubles and added her first career collegiate home run in the second game to finish 4-5 on the day. Copple finished 2-3 in both games and now leads the team hitting .323 on the season.

In the opener, Wright State jumped up 3-0 early but the Titans plated two in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2. Junior Whitney Stratton (Muskegon, MI/Fruitport) led off with a walk and stole second to move into scoring position. The two RBI came from Copple and Cupp who had back-to-back RBI doubles. That inning ended on a triple play for the Titans as freshman Karyn McCarty (Allen Park, MI/Cabrini) came to the plate with runners on first and second. McCarty hit a ground ball to third base and the fielder stepped on third for one out and threw to first for the second. After some confusion, the first baseman threw the ball to the catcher thinking the play was over. The Titan runner on first then tried to advance to second and was tagged out to end the inning.

Single Raider runs came in both the third and sixth innings before Detroit closed the door on defense and started up the offensive rally. Down 5-2, the Titan sixth saw three runs light up the scoreboard. Back-to-back fielder's choice ground balls with the bases loaded scored two Detroit runs before a Renee Zaccagni (Macomb, MI/Dakota) bloop single down the left field line added another run in the frame.

The final inning started out with Stratton's second walk of the game. She was sacrificed to second by Copple. After an intentional walk to Cupp, freshman Erin Huddleston (Normal, IL/Normal West) hit a ball to second base and an attempt to throw Huddleston out found the backstop and the error allowed Stratton to come in from third for the winning run.

In game two, Wright State was held at bay through five as Bondy kept the Raiders off the scoreboard.

The Titans went up in the fourth with two runs as Cupp launched a two-run shot over the left field wall. One Raider run came in the top of the sixth but in the home half, Huddleston added some insurance with a three-run blast to left to give Detroit a 5-1 lead with just three outs needed to seal the deal.

Wright State would not roll over as the Raiders came back with five runs in the top of the seventh and took a 6-5 lead heading into Detroit's final three outs.

The scrappy young Titans would come back once again.

With Zaccagni on first after a single, a walk to freshman Alyssa Gietl (Plymouth, MI/Ladywood) put runners on first and second with one out. Freshman Hannah Klenk (Hamilton, MI/Hamilton) then hit a ground ball to the pitcher and a hesitation from the pitcher allowed Klenk to beat out the throw at first and the bases were juiced with Stratton headed to the dish. Stratton would hit a ball to the shortstop far enough and hard enough to take away the easy defensive play and score Zaccagni to tie the game. Copple then laced a ball to the centerfield wall that brought Gietl home for game-winning run.

With seven home games remaining, all in the conference, in this year's regular season schedule, the two victories on the day give the young Titan squad a boost as Detroit tries to finish the year with a bang and make a splash in the Horizon League. The three-game series will conclude Sunday at Buysse Ballpark with first pitch set for noon.
