Game 3 Box Score
DETROIT -- After yesterday's doubleheader sweep, the Titans (7-31, 2-14 Horizon League) closed the series with Wright State (22-26, 11-10 Horizon League) Sunday afternoon with an 11-1 defeat in six innings at Buysse Ballpark. The loss still gives Detroit the 2-1 series win with six games remaining on this year's regular season schedule.
Three home runs and 11 hits for the Raiders were too much to overcome for Detroit in the series finale. Wright State plated one in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and added five more in the fifth for the win.
The Titans scored their run in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman
Sara Cupp (Hartland, MI/Milford) started off the frame with a walk and freshman
Erin Huddleston (Normal, IL/Normal West) moved her to second with a single up the middle with freshman
Katelyn Steffel (Defiance, OH/Defiance) coming to the plate. Steffel hit a ball to the second baseman that was thrown away and allowed Cupp to score for Detroit on the error.
Steffel also added a hit in the second inning with a single to right field.
Cupp finished the series 4-7 (.571) at the plate with three walks (two intentional) and a 1.286 slugging percentage. She had an on-base percentage of .700 in the weekend's three games. She added a pair of doubles and also belted her first collegiate home run with a two-run blast in game two of the series Saturday afternoon.
Although Detroit was on the losing end of today's game, there were some defensive highlights in the game. At the end of the second inning with a runner on first, a groundball to junior
Rachel Copple (Dearborn Heights, MI/Cabrini) at second base was turned over to junior
Whitney Stratton (Muskegon, MI/Fruitport) covering second base who threw the ball to first to turn the 4-6-3 double play.
Copple also made a highlight reel play at the end of the third as she made a diving stop on a ball that she played on the edge of the infield dirt behind first base. Copple stopped the ball and from her knees flipped the ball to first base for the final out of the inning.
The Titans will now look ahead to hosting Cleveland State at Buysse Ballpark this week. The Vikings will head to Detroit for a doubleheader Tuesday starting at 3:00 p.m., followed by a third contest Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
