DETROIT -- The Detroit Titan softball team was in action in its first non-competition tournament of the fall season this past weekend. The Titans had a pair of games on Saturday followed by two more on Sunday.
“Fall ball helps the newcomers eliminate some jitters and make them less anxious. It gives them a chance to idle down, get some at bats and just get comfortable,” said softball head coach Sunny Jones.
Detroit played Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan on Saturday at Concordia College in Ann Arbor followed by match-ups with Hillsdale and Macomb CC at Eastern Michigan's indoor facility on Sunday. The games were originally to be held at EMU's Varsity Field but unplayable field conditions forced a last minute change of plans.
“We ran ourselves out a few innings because of our youth with missed signs and not executing but I think overall we have a very athletic team this year with interchangeable parts which is a nice combination for us,” said Jones.
The Titans came out with a win over Macomb and played their other match-ups tight staying within a few runs (four as the largest unofficial margin) in each contest. The offense came up with over 15 runs over the course of the four games including two run-scoring squeeze plays in one inning. Please note, the non-traditional season does not produce statistics and scores like the regular season.
“These games allow us to switch kids around in different positions because we have several kids that can play multiple positions and it basically allows us to see what we have on the team. We did a lot of mixing and matching and pulling people in and out of innings where we typically wouldn't in a real game situation,” added Jones.
Detroit returns 10 letterwinners from a year ago and a slew of new individuals for the upcoming season. Nine freshmen and a sophomore transfer add depth to a team that features a pair of seniors, one junior and seven sophomores.
The official 2012 season schedule will be released in January or February.
