ON TAP

Detroit embarks on the second half of the Horizon League schedule Wednesday when it hosts Loyola.  The Titans went 4-5 in the front end of the conference slate and will look to use this three-game homestand as a springboard to a solid stretch run.

SCOUTING THE RAMBLERS
Loyola is still in search of its first league win and has dropped seven games in a row overall.  LU's last victory came more than a month ago in a 59-45 win at Canisius on Dec. 22.  Loyola is led by its frontcourt of Ben Averkamp and Wilt Gibler, both of whom appear in the top 10 in the Horizon League in scoring.   Gibler's 14.1 points per game average is sixth in the circuit while Averkamp checks in at 13.9 ppg (7th).

THE SERIES WITH LU
The Ramblers and Titans are meeting for the 120th time in a series that dates back to 1923 and Loyola holds a 67-52 advantage in the all-time series. Detroit owns wins in each of the last six games between the schools, including three victories last season.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Detroit finishes the homestand Friday against UIC before making the Indiana swing at Valpo (Feb. 2) and at Butler (Feb. 4).  The next UDM home games follow on Feb. 10 (Milwaukee) and Feb. 12 (Green Bay).

LAST TIME OUT
Four Titans scored in double figures, led by 16 from senior Chase Simon as host Detroit cruised past Wright State, 69-53, Saturday afternoon in a homecoming tilt at Calihan Hall.  The Titans shot 60 percent from the field in the opening half and built a 13-point lead at the break and never looked back. Simon had four of Detroit's season-high-tying triples (on nine attempts).  Junior Jason Calliste tallied a dozen points while Doug Anderson and Ray McCallum led the team with six boards apiece.

HOLD THE FORT
Detroit set a season-best Saturday by holding Wright State to just 53 points.  It was the fifth time this year that the Titans have kept an opponent under the 60-point threshold and was the lowest total for a Detroit foe since Central Michigan mustered just 49 points in a Titan rout last season (75-49, Dec. 18).

JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT
The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight project is a nationwide effort to identify basketball games between Jesuit schools and, through those games, bring greater positive awareness to Jesuit education and mission. This project was developed by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) in response to member institutions wanting to spread the word of Jesuit higher education through the more than 90 basketball games in which Jesuit institutions play each other. Both Detroit and Loyola are Jesuit institutions.

ALL-AROUND GUY
Sophomore Ray McCallum appears in the top 10 on a handful of categories in the Horizon League statistics.  The Preseason HL Player of the Year is the league's second-leading scorer (15.3 ppg), is fourth in assists (3.7 apg), fifth in free throw percentage (79.3) and seventh in steals (1.3 spg).  McCallum leads the team in scoring, assists and steals again this year after becoming the first freshman in school history to claim that honor last season.

THE PUSH TO 1,000
Three Detroit players are pushing towards the four-digit point toal for their careers.  Senior Chase Simon already surpassed the mark and sits at 1,222 heading into Wednesday's game.  Senior Eli Holman is at 863 and sophomore Ray McCallum is at 765.  Depending on the number of games beyond the regular season are played, both Holman and McCallum have a reasonable shot to reach 1,000 by scoring just above their current scoring averages.

RIGHT TO THE POINT
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. announced the 20 finalists for the 2012 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award, including Detroit sophomore Ray McCallum. The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in college basketball. An original list of 60-plus candidates was trimmed by a Hall of Fame appointed, nationally-based committee to the below list of 20 student-athletes.  The current listing of 20 finalists for the 2012 Bob Cousy Award will be narrowed down to 10 players in early February and then down to five players by early March. The final five players in contention for the award will be presented to Mr. Cousy and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.

SILVER DOUBLE-DOULBLE
Senior Eli Holman registered the first double-double of his season in the Jan. 14 loss at Milwaukee.  His 12-point, 11-rebound effort gave him his 25th career double-double.  Holman led the Horizon League in that category last year with 13.

REJECTION ROW
A pair of current Titans are in the top five all-time in career blocked shots: with Eli Holman sitting third with 148 swats and LaMarcus Lowe moving into fifth with 130 career blocks.  Holman needs seven to pass Brian Humes for second-most all-time while Lowe's next rejection will tie him for fourth place with Greg Grant.  The career leader is Terry Tyler, who threw aside a whopping 359 shots in his career from 1976-78.

Career Block Leaders at Detroit
  1. Terry Tyler, 1976-78      359
  2. Brian Humes, 1984-87  154
  3. Eli Holman, '09-pres.     148
