DETROIT (10/30/12) - The University of Detroit Mercy softball team completed a successful fall schedule on Sunday, October 14, at Bowling Green. Detroit finished 7-0 against five different opponents over the three-week schedule.
“We had a great fall season,” said first year head coach Liz Young. “Everyone hit and everyone hit well. We pitched by committee and we pitched well, got ahead, hit our spots and kept the batters off balance. We ran the bases and played great defense and our record reflected that.”
The Titans opened the fall season with a doubleheader against Wayne State on September 23. In game one,
Kayla Kostich hit a home run and
Julia Maksym had a RBI single to right to lead Detroit to a 7-2 victory. In game two,
Sara Cupp hit a grand slam to right in the top of the sixth and
Katy Severson gapped a double to left-center to propel UDM to a 13-7 win. Detroit totaled eight stolen bases in the doubleheader.
UDM downed The University of Michigan-Dearborn by a score of 3-0 on October 5. Senior
Anna Bondy and freshman
Christa McGahuey split time in the circle keeping the Wolves off the scoreboard.
Alyssa Schaub had a two-run double to right field to help Detroit to its third victory of the fall season.
Against Oakland, the Titans were led by Kostich,
Vanessa Garcia and the pitching staff. Detroit's pitchers allowed only three runs over the course of the two games, while the offense scored 13. Kostich and Garcia both hit home runs to lead UDM to a 10-3 win in game one and a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.
Detroit ended the fall season with a road trip to Ohio to face Akron on October 13 and a scheduled doubleheader against Bowling Green but game two of the doubleheader was canceled due to rain. Against Akron, Kostich added two more homers to her fall total, while
Sam Henderson hit a sacrifice fly to give UDM a 4-2 triumph.
In the contest with BGSU, the Titans were down 3-0 in the fourth inning when Cupp hit a bomb over the right field fence to spark the offense. Detroit threatened late in the game with two runners on and two outs. Kostich singled to left field to plate a run and BGSU committed a pair of errors to hand UDM a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
The Falcons had a chance to tie the game with a runner at third and two outs in the bottom of the seventh. There was a softly hit ball to third base and the runner at third broke for home. Kostich came from behind the plate, grabbed the ball and dove back home to tag the runner and end the game to keep UDM's record unblemished.
