CHAPEL HILL, NC. -- Sophomore
Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) recorded his third hat trick of the season – and the eighth of his career – but it was not enough to pull off the upset as the Titans fell to #6 North Carolina, 18-8, on Saturday afternoon.
"We played well at times, but we need to keep working hard and clean up the mistakes as we move forward," said head coach Matt Holtz.
Sophomore
Joel Matthews (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) posted a game-high five points as he had two goals and three assists for the second-straight game. Senior
Tim Lehto (Farmington, MI/North Farmington), sophomore
Scott Drummond (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm) and freshman
Mike Birney (Plymouth, MI/Catholic Central) also all found the back of the net.
Matthews – who was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List earlier in the week - has 14 points on seven goals and seven assists through four games.
Both teams traded goals to start the game as Adams squared it at 1-all nearly four minutes in. After a North Carolina (3-0) goal, Matthews took a pass from senior
Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) and tied it at 2-all halfway through the first.
The Tar Heels opened the game up by scoring 10 of the next 11 goals, including three with the man-up. The highly-ranked UNC squad started the spurt with four-straight goals until Matthews found the back of the net again to cut the deficit to three, 6-3, with 11:52 left in the second. Sophomore
Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) earned the assist on that.
North Carolina then went on another streak with six in a row to take a 12-3 lead with 9:44 left in the third.
Detroit (1-3) tallied back-to-back markers in the third as Maini found Adams for a goal and then Matthews fed Adams, who ripped one past the goalie for his hat trick.
Detroit then ended the game with three-straight goals as Maini recorded his career-high third assist of the game by locating Birney, who then put one past the keeper. Matthews earned his third assist of the game off Drummond's goal, while Lehto had an unassisted marker to end the game.
Junior
Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) had four caused turnovers and six ground balls, while junior
John Dwyer (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central) had a pair of caused TO's and three GB's.
Junior
A.J. Levell (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) started in net and made 10 saves in 30 minutes, while freshman
Chris Kelly (Valrico, FL/Saint Andrews) took over in the second half finishing with three saves.
UNC outshot Detroit, 44-26, and won the battle for ground balls (51-32) and face-offs (19-of-27).
The Titans will return to action next Saturday as they make another long road trip. This time, the red, white and blue will visit the Peach State to face Mercer. Game time is slated for Noon.
