JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Junior
Collette Hansen (West Olive, MI/Grand Haven) posted a career-low 72 to earn runner-up as the final 18 holes of the Benbow Invitational was completed on Tuesday evening. The event- hosted by Butler- was played on the Par 72, 6,079-yard Jacksonville Beach Golf Club.
Hansen tallied a 150 (78, 72), but her even-par performance on the final 18 was tied for the best round in the tournament. Her day would move her all the way into a share of first, but she would fall in a playoff. She would also lead the field in the 36-hole competition with nine birdies as well as a 3-under, 2.63 average on the course's Par 3's.
“She picked us up and played great,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “She stepped up without Lindsey (Lammers) and led this team, not just today, but all week.”
The Titans claimed fourth in the 14-team field with a 647 (324, 323). As a team, UDM was first in Par 3 scoring with a 3-over 3.09 average, and was second with 16 birdies. IUPUI won the title with a 614 (315,299).
“Considering that we did not have Lindsey and played with just four players, I am very happy with the way we competed,” said Ryan. “When we are healthy, there is no question what we have with this team.”
Freshman
Olivia Richards (Waterford, Ontario/Simcoe Compostie) posted another top-10 finish tying for sixth with a 155 (77, 78). She led the team with 21 pars and was second in Par 3 scoring (1-under, 2.88).
Sophomore
Christina Thorne (Kingston, ON/Bayridge) tied for 35th with a 167 (84, 83), while junior
Danyelle Kauble (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central) shared 56th carding a 175 (85,90).
The Titans will now have nearly three weeks off from competition as Detroit's next action is set for April 2-3 at the IPFW Spring Classic.
