Game 1: Detroit 10, Oakland 7
Game 2: Oakland 9, Detroit 0 (5 inn.)
DETROIT, Mich.-- Freshman Vanessa Garcia's first collegiate homer capped a six-run fifth inning to help host Detroit to a doubleheader split against Oakland University Wednesday afternoon in the Titans' home opener. Detroit rallied for a 10-7 win in game one before OU charged back for a 9-0 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
OU (3-15) scored runs in each of the first four innings, including a pair of homeruns from cleanup batter Leah DiCristofaro. Oakland got three in the first and another in the second to jump out to a 4-0 advantage.
Detroit (7-14) rallied to post two runs in each of the next two frames with Alyssa Schaub driving in the first pair on a double.
The Golden Grizzlies took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, where the Titans did their damage. UDM batted around in the inning and the big blow was a two-out, three-run blast over the left-centerfield wall by Garcia to break a 7-all tie.
Karyn McCarty-- who came on in relief in the third inning-- earned the win, throwing 5.0 innings while allowing just one earned run. The sophomore induced eight groundouts to etch her second win of the season.
Schaub and Garcia each finished the first game with three runs batted in while Allayna Stolp and Kat Hoffman joined Garcia with two hits apiece.
GAME TWO
Oakland again got out to an early lead and benefited from a pair of Detroit errors to prolong a third inning that produced five runs. The Grizzlies' Abbie Richardson allowed just three Titan hits over five innings.
Rachel Copple, Sara Cupp and Kat Hoffman each recorded hits in game two.
Detroit continues its seven-game homestand when it opens Horizon League play this weekend against Valparaiso. The Crusaders will battle the Titans in a Saturday doubleheader and a single game Sunday. Action both days begins at noon.
Notes: Detroit matched its win total from last season with the victory in the opener ... Garcia's homer gives Detroit four different players with dingers in the early going (Cupp, McCarty, Schaub).
