DETROIT, Mich.-- Two big innings proved to be the difference in Central Michigan's doubleheader sweep over Detroit Tuesday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark. The Chippewas posted 11 in the fourth inning of game one and had an eight-spot in the third inning of the nightcap.
GAME ONE
CMU (13-11) got on the board first, scoring a pair in the opening inning but Detroit immediately had an answer. In the bottom of the frame, Alyssa Schaub led-off with a double and Sara Cupp doubled her home two batters later to get one run back.
The Titans took the lead in the third inning with two more runs from the duo of Schaub and Cupp. After Schaub again doubled to open the frame, Cupp smacked her fifth homer of the year to stake Detroit to a 3-2 advantage.
It unraveled in the top of the next inning when CMU broke the game open with 11 runs and three homers and the Chips took game one, 14-4, in five innings.
Cupp and Schaub combined for four of Detroit's seven hits while Alyssa Gietl, Allayna Stolp and Kat Hoffman each added hits.
GAME TWO
Central again scored two in the first inning to take the early advantage. It would be the third inning that gave Detroit fits as CMU benefited from four Titan errors to prolong the inning, scoring six of their runs unearned.
Schaub was the highlight for the Titan offense again. She hit a towering homer down the left-field line, tucking it just inside the foul pole for the Titans' run.
Cupp reached base twice, singling and walking in her three plate appearances. Hoffman was able to get the Titans out of the third inning and went 2.2 innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts, allowing just two hits.
The Titans return to Horizon League play this weekend when they head to Wright State for a three-game set. The series gets underway Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader and concludes with a single game Sunday.
