ORLANDO, Fla. -- The 2012 Sunshine Spring Classic came to an end and Detroit was able to record another top-5 finish tying for third in the two-day tournament. The event – hosted by Detroit - was held at the Par 72, 6008-yard Rio Pinar Country Club.
“Playing without our number one in Lindsey was tough, but everyone stepped up and played well,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “We came down here to get prepared for the Horizon League Championship and we feel that this field and tournament did that for us.”
UDM finished the 36-hole tournament with a 329 on Friday for a 642 total. Lehigh won the team title with a 623 (309, 314), while Seminole State Community College (631) was second Indiana State tied with Detroit for third.
Junior
Collette Hansen (West Olive, MI/Grand Haven) was the top Titan in the clubhouse tying for third with a 154 (73, 81).
“Hansen showed her true leadership on and off the course with her performance so far,” added Ryan.
Freshman
Olivia Richards (Waterford, Ontario/Simcoe Compostie) tied for 13th with a 158 (77, 81), while sophomore
Christina Thorne (Kingston, ON/Bayridge) took 23rd carding a 162 (79, 83).
“Olivia and Christina played well and they showed how deep of a team we have,” said Ryan. “Other people have to step up when someone goes down.”
The Titans will finish their Florida action with one more tournament as the red, white and blue play in Butler's Don Benbow Invitational. The two-day event begins on Monday at the Jacksonville Beach Club.
