Late-Game Heroics Lifts Detroit in Earning DH Split at BGSU

Box scores
Game one: Bowling Green 6, Detroit 4
Game two: Detroit 3, Bowling Green 1

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio--  Late-inning heroics helped visiting Detroit earn a doubleheader split with Bowling Green at Merserve Field Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.  BGSU took game one, 6-4, before the Titans rode a three-run sixth inning to a 3-1 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE
Detroit (9-27) got on the board first with a single run in the first inning thanks to a pair of Falcon miscues.  Kat Hoffman came all the way around to score when Sara Cupp's rocket to left field skipped past the fielder and the relay throw got away from the catcher to provide the first run.

BGSU (22-15) repsonded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and it remained there until the fifth inning.  In that frame, Sam Henderson led off with a walk then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dani Holmes.  The two-out rally began when Hoffman reached on an error to put runners on the corners.  Cupp worked an 0-2 count full and then whacked a towering shot over the rightfield wall for a three-run homer and a 4-3 Detroit lead.

The home team tacked-on another three-spot in the bottom of that inning to regain control and eventually took the first game, 6-4.

Cupp drove in all four Detroit runs in the first game with a pair of hits.  Alyssa Schaub, Rachel Copple and Vanessa Garcia all added hits for Detroit.

GAME TWO
A pitcher's dual ensued in the nightcap as zeroes dotted the linescore until the fifth inning.  Karyn McCarty was unscathed through four, working out of innings with the leadoff batter aboard in the first two innings.  In the fifth, BG got a double to start things and an infield single later drove her in as the home team gained a slim 1-0 advantage.

In the sixth, Hoffman beat out an infield single to start the frame, setting the stage for the Detroit comeback.  Cupp followed with an opposite field single then Copple hit a double to right center to tie the score with nobody down.  After a popout and a groundout, Shelby Long smashed the first pitch she saw, one-hopping the fence in right-centerfield to score a pair and give the Titans a 3-1 lead.

Hoffman was summoned from right field to get out of a jam in the sixth after the first two batters walked and she obliged.  She induced a flyout to left for the first out then struck out the next two batters to strand a pair of runners and keep Detroit on top.  She earned her first career save after shrugging off a leadoff double in the final inning.  A grounder moved the runner to third then another grounder to first base produced the game-ending double play.  Cupp scooped up the grounder, touched first and fired home to get the runner attempting to score, making the Titans victorious.  The freshman went two innings, squandering just one hit and striking out two.

Detroit banged out eight hits in game two with Cupp and Copple each producing a pair.  McCarty earned the win, going five innings, allowing just five hits and one earned run.  She got eight flyouts and induced six groundouts in posting her third win of the season.

The Titans return to Horizon League play this weekend, hosting the UIC Flames Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series.  Saturday's doubleheader is Senior Day with first pitch slated for noon at Buysse Ballpark.
