Big Innings Doom Titans in Wednesday DH

BOX SCORES
Game 1- Youngstown State 9, Detroit 0 (6 inn.)
Game 2- Youngstown State 10, Detroit 1 (6 inn.)

DETROIT-- Two big innings helped propel visiting Youngstown State past Detroit in a Wednesday Horizon League doubleheader at Buysse Ballpark.  An eight-run sixth inning gave the Penguins the win in game one and a five-run opening inning started game two's victory.

GAME ONE
Goose eggs found the scoreboard for the first four innings until YSU finally broke through by scratching across a single run in the fifth.  Three singles in that frame produced the game's first run and Titan starter Karyn McCarty ended the threat by getting a called strike three to the Penguins' cleanup batter to keep it 1-0.

In the next inning, McCarty got two quick outs but a two-out error and two more during the inning prolonged things and eventually put eight runs on the board for YSU.  All of those runs would go unearned.  McCarty had allowed just five hits in the five innings leading up to that final frame.

The lone Titan hit came off the bat of Vanessa Garcia, who beat out an infield hit to leadoff the second inning.

Casey Crozier earned the win, throwing six innings of one-hit ball with two walks and eight strikeouts.

GAME TWO
YSU picked up right where it left off with a five-spot in the first inning.  A pair of homers did the damage and Detroit found itself down 5-0 through a half inning.

Alyssa Schaub answered right away in the bottom of that inning, blasting her fourth homer of the year over the leftfield wall.  Kat Hoffman followed with a solid single up the middle and the Titans looked to chip away at the deficit.

But, YSU starter Hana Somogyi did not allow another hit until the fifth inning, when Dani Holmes spanked a single to center field.  Somogyi earned the win by going five innings, allowing three hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts.

The two teams finish their series Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.  It marks the final home game for Detroit this season.
