YSU Takes Titan Home Finale

Box score

DETROIT--  Youngstown State used a balanced offensive attack to take the third and final game of a Horizon League series, 9-1, over Detroit in a Thursday afternoon softball matinee.  The game was the final home contest for the Titans this season.

YSU (24-12, 8-7 HL) scored in every inning to take control of third place in the league standings.  Seven different Penguins scored runs, led by right fielder Jordan Ingalls who touched home three times in the game.

Detroit (10-33, 2-12) was led by freshman Kat Hoffman, who rapped a couple base knocks on the afternoon, including a bunt single in the first that the speedy frosh beat to the bag.  She later singled to left and also threw three innings of three-hit ball in relief.

The Titans' run came in the fifth, when they needed a run to keep the game alive.  They got it after Alyssa Schaub started things with a solid single to center and she later advanced on a wild pitch.  After a groundout advanced her within 60 feet, she scampered around on another wild pitch-- this one with the bases loaded.  But, Detroit could do no further damage and the Penguins scored in the sixth to provide the winning margin.

Alyssa Gietl doubled in the fourth and Dani Holmes sent a come-backer through the box for the other Titan hits on the afternoon.

Detroit takes to the road for its final nine games of the regular season.  The trip begins with a three-game set at Butler on Saturday and Sunday.  The doubledip on Saturday is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
