Butler Takes Pair on Saturday

Box scores
Game 1: Butler 7, Detroit 2
Game 2: Butler 8, Detroit 3

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.--  Butler swept a twinbill over Detroit at Butler Softball Field Saturday afternoon in Horizon League play. The Bulldogs nabbed a 7-2 win in the opener before an 8-3 victory in the encore game.

GAME ONE
BU (19-27, 9-8) scored a single run in the bottom of the third inning to garner the early advantage.  Senior Rachel Copple roped the first pitch she saw in the top of the next frame into the gap in the left center for her 12th two-bagger of the season.  It leaves her two away from tying the school record for doubles in a single season.

After Vanessa Garcia sacrificed her over to third, Karyn McCarty helped her own cause by driving her in with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.  Butler answered in its half of the fourth, however, as a single and a pair of miscues opened the door to a five-run inning to put the home team up 6-1 through four complete.

The Dawgs added a run in the fifth and Detroit tacked on a run in the top of the seventh for the 7-2 final.  Dani Holmes had a pair of hits for her second multi-hit game of the season to lead the Detroit (10-35, 2-14 HL) offense.  McCarty and Shelby Long each added knocks for the Titans in game one.

GAME TWO
Butler wasted little time getting things going in the nightcap, scoring four in the first inning.  Detroit had its answer in the third when Hannah Klenk and Kat Hoffman each coaxed walks to set the table for Sara Cupp.  The sophomore slugger rocketed a single to left that skipped past the fielder allowing both runners to score and slicing the lead in half, 4-2.

The home squad tallied runs in the third and fourth before a two-run sixth to blow the game open.  McCarty worked a two-out walk in the seventh and Long did as well.  Klenk then hit a chopper to second that she beat out and pinch-runner Allayna Stolp came around to score for an 8-3 game.  That's where it would end to give BU the sweep.

The three-game series wraps-up Sunday in the Circle City.  First pitch is slated for noon.
