INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- Butler completed the three-game series with a 9-2 win over Detroit at Butler Softball Field Sunday in Horizon League action.
Freshman Kat Hoffman was cruising early, setting down the side in order in the first before allowing an unearned run in the second after a dropped third strike let Erin Falkenberry reach. She later came around on the game's first hit for a 1-0 advantage for the home Bulldogs. Butler (20-27, 10-8 HL) added another in that inning for a 2-0 cushion.
Hoffman got the offense going for Detroit (10-36, 2-15) by leading off the fourth with a sharp single up the middle. Sara Cupp drove her home a batter later when she stroked a liner into the right-centerfield gap for her 32nd RBI of the season. An error and a walk loaded the bases for Sam Henderson, who drew a two-out base on balls to tie the score at 2-apiece.
BU responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to regain control and put up a four-spot in the home half of the fifth. That was plenty for Bulldog starter Leah Bry, who earned her fourth win over Detroit this season, going six innings, allowing a pair of runs and three hits.
Cupp and Alyssa Schaub each had doubles while Hoffman and Hannah Klenk added the other Titan hits. Hoffman reached base three times Sunday (hit, walk, hit by pitch).
The Titans have eight days off before their next action. Detroit travels to Cleveland State for a three-game series May 1-2. The regular season closes at Loyola May 5-6.
