Game 2: IPFW 9, Detroit 1
DETROIT-- Visiting IPFW claimed a doubleheader sweep, 4-2 and 9-1, over Detroit in non-league softball action Thursday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark. The Mastodons staved off a late Titan rally in game one, then used a pitching gem in game two to garner the sweep.
GAME ONE
IPFW (27-9) grabbed single runs in each of the first two innings to stake itself to a two-run lead through an inning and a half. Detroit (7-24) answered in the home half of the second when Kat Hoffman scooted home on Vanessa Garcia's sacrifice bunt and the Titans closed to within one.
The Mastodons countered in the top of the next frame with a pair of RBI singles to stretch their advantage to 4-1. Detroit had its opportunities to pounce but stranded 11 runners, including two in each of the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
Still trailing 4-1, Detroit got a leadoff bunt single from Hoffman in the final inning. Sara Cupp was plunked a batter later and the Titans brought the tying run to the plate. After Garcia grounded out to move the runnners into scoring position with one down, Rachel Copple was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hoffman scored on a wild pitch and the potential winning run now stood at second with two outs. Courtney Cronin was able to get the final out and improve to 14-5 on the season.
Hoffman scored both Detroit runs while Alyssa Schaub, Cupp, Garcia and Karyn McCarty joined her with hits in the opener. McCarty took the loss, going 4.2 innings allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts and two walks.
GAME TWO
Megan Flenniken pitched a solid game in the nightcap, taking a no-hitter into the final inning. There, Cupp laced a solid single past the shortstop to start the action. Two batters later, Rachel Copple roped a run-scoring double to right-center, scoring pinch runner Allayna Stolp.
It was all Detroit would get off of Flenniken, who went the distance and struck out seven. Her offense gave her a three-run lead in the third and then tacked-on four more in the fifth for a comfortable cushion. The Mastodons got a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to help close it out.
Julia Maksym was saddled with the loss after allowing two earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched.
The Titans return to Horizon League action tomorrow when they start a three-game series against Green Bay at Buysse Ballpark. Friday's doubleheader starts at noon.
