Post-game interview with Coach Sunny Jones
DETROIT-- A four-run fifth inning powered Detroit past visiting Green Bay, 7-5, in a come-from-behind win Saturday morning at Buysse Ballpark. A bases-clearing double from
Shelby Long keyed the rally and gave Detroit the final game of the three-game series.
Green Bay (12-13, 2-4 HL) got off to a quick start with three runs in the top of the first inning to take control. But, the Titans (8-26, 1-8) weren't rattled and immediately grabbed two of those back in the bottom of the frame.
After
Kat Hoffman drew a one-out walk,
Sara Cupp drilled a line drive homer over the rightfield wall for her team-leading sixth round-tripper of the season, slicing the deficit to just one.
The Phoenix got another single run in the third and Detroit had the counter-punch in the bottom of the inning with Cupp again doing the damage.
Alyssa Schaub walked to start the inning and then Cupp's line shot up the middle produced Detroit's third run.
It remained 4-3 until the fifth when clutch hitting put the Titans on top for good. Detroit batted around in the inning with seven straight batters reaching base safely. Schaub singled through the left side to set the table on the big inning. A Hoffman walk followed then Cupp again cashed it in, as the tying run crossed on her RBI single to left field.
Rachel Copple walked and
Vanessa Garcia reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Long with two down. The Titan catcher rapped a double along the right field line to empty the bases and give Detroit a 7-4 advantage.
Julia Maksym made it hold up. After coming on in relief in the fourth inning, Maksym allowed just a solo homer in the seventh, scattering three hits and striking out two in her four innings of work to pick-up her fifth win of the season.
Cupp finished the day 3 for 3 with a homer and four RBI. Schaub scored a pair of runs and Long drove in two with her clutch double in the fifth.
Ashley Nannemann took the loss for Green Bay, throwing three innings, allowing four runs on four hits.
Detroit takes to the road for a Wednesday non-league doubleheader at Bowling Green. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
