POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Detroit started the game with three-straight goals and held a three-goal lead at the break, but a second-half run was too much to overcome as Detroit's season came to an end with a 12-10 loss to Canisius at the MAAC Championship Semifinals. The tournament is being held at Marist College in upstate New York.

Junior A.J. Levell (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) made 14 saves, including some big ones early to give the Titans the quick start. He even posted his first collegiate goal rifling one in as time expired.

Sophomore Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) netted two goals and had three points tying for the team lead with redshirt freshman Scott Drummond (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm), who had a goal and two assists. Senior Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) had two markers and freshman Brandon Beauregard (Clarkston, MI/Notre Dame Prep) notched a goal and an assist.

Just like in the regular season match-up, the Titans began the game with a run as UDM had a 3-0 lead after the first period. Sophomore Wes Steen (Columbus, OH/Olentangy Liberty) put in the game's first goal as he battled through some defensemen and found the back of the net at the 9:10 mark.

Harris then took a pass from senior John Nowicki (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle Collegiate) and standing just a few feet in front of the goalie, he was able to put in it. Freshman Brandon Beauregard then had an unassisted marker as he fired one in with 2:25 left in the first period.

Canisius got on the board early in the second, but then after Levell made two impressive saves, the Titans started a fast break off a clear and Drummond found Maini for another goal and a 4-1 lead with 10 minutes left in the second. Drummond then tacked on a goal at the 7:58 mark and UDM took a 5-2 lead to the intermission.

The Titan defense played great in the first half holding Canisius to just two goals on 17 shots. Levell made nine saves and the defense had three of its eight forced turnovers in that stretch.

The Golden Griffins then started the second half with three-straight tallies to knot the score at 5-all. On a man-up penalty, sophomore Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) got in the book with his only goal of the contest, but that was quickly followed by a goal from Canisius. 

The teams then traded goals again as Harris put in his first at the 5-minute mark of the third and the Golden Griffins posted one with 4:05 left to tie it at 7-all.

That last goal from Canisius started a 4-0 spurt and the Golden Griffins took the lead for good jumping out in front, 10-7, with 9:21 left in the fourth.

The Titans got within two down the stretch as sophomore Troy Dennis (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) made it 10-8 with 6:46 left and Maini registered his second marker of the game to trim the deficit to 11-9 with 4:31 remaining.  With time winding down, Levell then fired in his first goal and his second career point with his other coming against Canisius in the regular season last year.

Junior Tyler Corcoran (South Lyon, MI/South Lyon) won 10-of-15 face-offs and picked up a game and career-high nine ground balls. Senior Jon Bemben (Hartland, MI/Hartland) had two caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Levell and senior Adam Nolan (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) added two GB's apiece.

Detroit outshot Canisius, 40-35, and held a slim 36-35 edge on ground balls. UDM also recorded eight caused turnovers on the day as they came into the MAAC Championship leading the country with 10.64 per game.

The Titans played the game without four key members due to injury in leading scorer Joel Matthews (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross), second team All-MAAC defenseman Jamie Hebden (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice), sophomore midfielder Joe MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Detroit Country Day) and redshirt freshman Thomas Sible (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central). MAAC LSM of the Year Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) also played while not being 100%.

The Titans end their season at 6-9 overall and were 3-3 in the MAAC, tying for second place. Detroit also saw its first four-year senior class play its final game in Jon Bemben, Scott Harris, Brad Janer, Tim Lehto, Ty Maruyama, Jason McDonald, Adam Nolan, John Nowicki, Adam Parrottino and Danny Preston.
