BOARDMAN, Ohio (9/18/2012) --
Playing through some rainy conditions and a wet course, the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team was able to continue its winning ways as the Titans claimed another fall trophy winning the Youngstown State Invitational on Tuesday.

“It rained here the entire day, but we were able to play through it,” said head coach Terri Anthony-Ryan. “Everyone played a strong tournament and we showed that we are more than just one person. We have a very deep team.”

Detroit shot a 309 in the second and final round to post a 609 card – the third best 36-hole tournament score in school history - for a five-stroke victory over host Youngstown State. It was the 11th title for the Titans under Coach Ryan and the second-straight top finish to start the 2012-2013 campaign as the Titans won their Fall Classic last week.

Two players were in the top five and four were in the top 15 in the event, played at the Par 72, 5986-yard Mill Creek Park.

Sophomore Olivia Richards was the top Titan as she tallied a 76 on the day, just missing out on her second career medalist honor taking second place with a 149. Her six birdies did lead the 37-player field.

Junior Christina Thorne recorded her second-straight 75 to finish in a tie for third with a 150, while senior Danyelle Kauble took 12th with a 157 (76, 81). Thorne had five birdies and a team-high 22 pars, while topping the field in Par 3 (-1, 2.88) average and finishing second on the par 5's (-2, 4.75).

“Tina (Christina) played real steady, not just this week, but so far on the season,” added Ryan.

Sophomore Jessica Mallender earned a share of 13th after ending with a career-low 158 (76, 82), and senior Collette Hansen rebounded from a rocky opening 18 to card a 77 for a two-day 159 score and 16th place.

As a team, Detroit had the most birdies (19) and the second-most pars (99). The Titans +3, 3.18 average on the Par 3's and their -2, 4.95 average on Par 5's were also tournament highs.

Detroit will be idle the next few weeks as the Titans return to tournament action on Oct. 15, when the red, white and blue take part in the MAC Preview at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
