PORT CLINTON, Ohio (10/15/2013) -- Senior Lindsey Lammers earned another top-10 mark and the Titans saved their best for the final round as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team wrapped up the Rocket Classic on Tuesday.

"It was a bit of a grind out there for this tournament," said head coach Terri Anthony-Ryan. "We had a few players that weren't feeling great, but they toughed it out and came back and played well today."

The two-day, 54-hole tournament was hosted by Toledo at the Par 72, 5,929-yard Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton, Ohio.

The Titans carded their best round of the event with a 311 to tie for sixth with a 949 (314-324-311) scorecard. The 949 is now the third best 54-hole tournament score in school history trailing only the 920 at last year's Horizon League Championship and the 943 at the 2010 HL title hunt.

"We are a better team in the spring, but one of our goals is always beating all the Horizon League teams we play against and we did that here," added Coach Ryan.

Lammers carded a 78 on the final 18 to place ninth with a 231 (74-79-78), just two shots away from her career low. The finish also gave Lammers her 19 career top-10 effort as the veteran tallied two birdies and 10 pars in the final round and led UDM with 36 total pars, tying for fourth in that statistic in the 80-player field.

Junior Olivia Richards once again was one of the Titan leaders as she posted the best round on the team on the day with a 77 to end with a 236 (80-79-77), tying for 23rd place. After racking up four birdies in round two, she posted 12 pars and a birdie in round three for the 5-over score with her six overall birdies leading the team and tying for the sixth most among the competition.

"Lindsey had her back flare up, but she played through it and was just a few shots away from a great score," said Coach Ryan. "Olivia played a lot better today and had a chance at a better score with some breaks."

Senior Christina Thorne shook of yesterday's first two rounds to post a 78 on the final 18, giving her a 243 (83-82-78) total and a share of 40th place. Thorne knocked in 12 pars and added a birdie in the final round.

Freshman Sarah Thompson tied for 43rd with a 244 (77-84-83), but she rebounded from a slow start in her final round to tally her lone birdie of the tournament on her last hole. Her 32 pars was the second most on the squad in the event.

Junior Jessica Mallender took 12 shots off her second-round performance and tallied a season-low 78 in round three – which included a pair of birdies - and shared 67th with a 254 (86-90-78), while freshman Sarah Montone was 66th with a 253 (86-80-87) playing as an individual.

"I was very happy with Jess and with Sarah (Thompson) to shake off some tough holes and rounds to come back and play well," said Coach Ryan. "For the younger players, we don't play 36 in a day a lot so it was a grind for them and Jess came back with a strong score today and Sarah was 6-over on her first two holes, but she never quit."

Detroit will have one more event this fall as the red, white and blue go back into Ohio next week, Oct. 21-22, as the Titans compete in Dayton's Fall Invitational.
