Cupp Leads Titans at Day One of Blues City Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (2/22/13) – Sara Cupp hit two home runs in a 13-4 loss to Wichita State in game one of the Blues City Classic, while Sam Henderson went 2-4 with two doubles and three RBI and Alyssa Schaub had a home run and two RBI in a 10-7 loss in 10 innings to SEMO in the nightcap.
 
In the second game of the night, SEMO struck early with an RBI double to left field in the top of the first. Schaub answered right back when she led-off the bottom of the first with a solo home run of her own to tie the game at one run each.
 
In the bottom of the fourth with runners on first and second with one out, Vanessa Garcia doubled to left center to plate Kayla Kostich and give the Titans their first lead of the game 2-1.
 
The Redhawks struck back with four runs in the top of the sixth to take a three-run lead, 5-2.
 
After scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth, Henderson doubled to right center with the bases loaded to drive in two runners to tie the game at five at the end of regulation.
 
The teams traded runs in the eighth and ninth innings to bring the tally to 7-7 going into the 10th.
 
SEMO hit a three-run home run in the top half of the inning. UDM tried to respond  by loading the bases with two outs, but Hannah Klenk gournded out to end the game.
 
Kat Hoffman was charged with the loss (0-2) and McGahuey pitched 2.2 innings in relief and allowed only one run on three hits and one strikeout.
 
In the first game, Cupp hit a two-out home run over the right field fence to give Detroit an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
 
 Wichita State answered with five runs in the next two innings to go up by four 5-1.
 
Cupp homered again, this time over the center field fence, in the top of the third to cut the deficit to three.
 
The Shockers scored three in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fifth to go up 9-2 after five innings of play.
 
After Schaub scored on an illegal pitch, Kayla Kostich doubled to right field to plate Cupp and bring the Titans to within five, 9-4.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Shockers hit a walk-off grand slam to bring the final tally to 13-4.
 
Julia Maksym (0-4) was charged for the loss, allowing five hits in 2.1 innings on the rubber.
 
Detroit will continue play in the Blues City Classic on Saturday (Feb. 23) when the Titans face SIU-Edwardsville at 2:00 ET and host school Memphis at 5:00 ET, both games will be played at Greenbrook Park.
