SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (2/23/2013) – The UDM softball team defeated SIU-Edwardsville, 1-0, in eight innings in the first game and fell to host school Memphis, 6-1, in the second game at the Blues City Classic played in Southaven, Miss on Saturday.
Karyn McCarty (2-0) pitched eight scoreless innings allowing only four hits and recording four strikeouts to lead the Titans (2-7) to a win in game one against the Cougars while
Alyssa Schaub went 2-3 with a run scored in the nightcap against Memphis.
SIUE had runners in scoring position on five different occasions but McCarty and the Titans' defense did not allow a run to cross the plate. The Cougars threatened in the first with runners on first and second with one out but McCarty forced a pop out and a ground out to escape unharmed. Edwardsville had a base runner on third in the top of the sixth inning with two outs but McCarty forced a fly ball to left field to deny the Cougars the run.
In the Titan's half of the eighth,
Katy Severson moved
Kat Hoffman to third with a sacrifice bunt and
Kayla Kostich flied out to center to bring Severson to the plate and take the first lead of the game, 1-0. In the Cougars' half of the inning, SIUE had a runner on second with one out when Chelsea Yankolovich singled to left field. Kelsey Hansen rounded third to try and score, but UDM's
Dani Holmes came up firing from left field and gunned-down Hansen at the plate to deny the run and preserve the lead for the Titans. McCarty forced a ground-out to end the game and give UDM their second win of the season.
In game two, senior pitcher
Anna Bondy pitched three scoreless innings in relief allowing one hit and striking out two batters and Schaub went 2-3 with a run scored and a double to lead the Titans.
Memphis scored early on a passed ball in the top of the first and would add another run in the top of the third on an RBI single to go up by two after three innings of play. The Tigers threatened again in the top of the fourth with runners on first and second with two outs. Breslin Taylor singled through the left side to plate a run to go up by three. Memphis then capitalized on two errors by first baseman
Sara Cupp to go up, 6-0, after the fourth inning.
Bondy held the Tigers scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings to set-up UDM's offense in the bottom of the sixth. Schaub led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Schaub advanced to third on a ground out and crossed the plate on a wild pitch to put UDM on the board. Detroit threatened again in the bottom of the seventh when McCarty doubled down the left field line with two outs, but she was left stranded on second base.
The Titans are now 2-7 on the year and will wrap-up the Blues City Classic with a single game against UMKC tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
