WILMINGTON, N.C. (2/8/13) -- The Detroit softball team began the 2013 season with a doubleheader against Iona and UNC-Wilmington at the UNCW Beach Blast on Friday.

UDM (0-2) dropped the first game to Iona (1-0) by a score of 11-3, and fell to the host school, UNC-Wilmington, 8-0, in the second game.

In game one, Kat Hoffman pitched well, but was charged with the loss after allowing four hits and one unearned run in three innings of work. Katy Severson went 2-for-3 and Kayla Kostich had a double and two RBI in their UDM debuts.

Iona got on the board with a run in the first, but Detroit answered when Alyssa Schaub reached on an error and Christa McGahuey singled to center to drive her home and tie the game at one at the end of the first.

The Gaels took the lead in the top of the fourth when they scored six runs on a pair of home runs and an RBI double to go up, 7-1.

In the bottom of the fifth Detroit had a rally going as Hoffman reached base on an error and advanced to second on a single to center by Allayna Stolp. UDM then had runners on second and third with one out as Kostich drilled a two-run double to the left-center field gap to make it 7-3 after five innings of play.

Iona then plated a run in the top of the sixth and added three more in the seventh to make the final score 11-3.

In game two against UNCW, Julia Maksym (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing only one earned run on four hits, while striking out five. The Seahawks' Casey Rowland pitched a one-hitter, with the lone hit coming off the bat of Kostich in the first.
