WILMINGTON, N.C. (2/9/13) -- The Detroit softball team dropped its first game to Omaha, 7-2, but responded and took the nightcap against UNC-Wilmington by a score of 10-4 on Saturday at Boseman Field. The win was the first for the Titans under first-year head coach Liz Young.
Sam Henderson hit the first two home runs of her career over the two games and
Karyn McCarty pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings and went 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs and an RBI in the victory over the Seahawks.
Against UNC-Wilmington, the Titans exploded with 10 runs on nine hits as McCarty earned the win in the circle. Henderson hit her second homer of the day and scored two runs, while freshman
Katy Severson and junior
Sara Cupp went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
The Seahawks got on the board first when they scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first.
The Titans answered in the top of the second when Cupp doubled to right field and Severson singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. McCarty then helped her own cause with a one-out single to right to plate Cupp and knot the game at one apiece.
Vanessa Garcia then laid down a sacrifice bunt to push the runners to second and third and
Allayna Stolp walked to load the bases with two outs. The Titans then took advantage of a UNCW error that scored two runs and another Seahawks' miscue saw Stolp score on a wild pitch to put UDM up, 4-1.
The lead didn't last long as the Seahawks scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie it at 4-4.
McCarty would come in to pitch with two outs in the bottom of the third and a runner on second and she got out of that jam and ended up holding UNCW scoreless for the rest of the game.
It was still 4-4 coming into the sixth and that is when Henderson led off with her second homer of the day, this one clearing the centerfield fence to break the tie and give UDM a one-run lead. Detroit then scored three more runs on three UNCW errors to take an 8-4 lead after six innings.
Detroit added to its advantage in the seventh when Henderson scored on a wild pitch and
Katelyn Steffel singled up the middle to drive in McCarty to bring the final tally to 10-4 in favor of the Titans.
In game one,
Alyssa Schaub hit a double into the left-center field gap, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch as Detroit took an early 1-0 lead over Omaha in the first.
Omaha responded with three runs in the top of the third on a three-run home run to go up by two, 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Henderson hit her first home run over the right-field fence to bring the Titans within one, 3-2.
The Mavericks answered with a run of their own in the sixth and three more in the seventh inning for the 7-2 win.
The Titans will wrap-up the weekend with a game against Omaha at Boseman field at 9:00 a.m.
