MOREHEAD, Ky. (3/14/13) – The Detroit softball team split a doubleheader with Morehead State Thursday afternoon, taking the first game, 7-4, but falling in game two, 5-1.
In game one,
Sam Henderson went 2-4 with four RBI,
Kayla Kostich went 2-3 and
Katy Severson had a hit and two RBI in the game.
Kat Hoffman earned her first win of the season, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing only two earned runs.
Karyn McCarty pitched three innings in relief and allowed one earned run and struck out two batters.
“Sam did a good job of simplifying her game today,” said head coach Liz Young. “She made adjustments at the plate and in the field. She is an unselfish player that always put the team first.”
In the top of the first inning,
Katy Severson drove home two runs on a bloop single to center field.
Sam Henderson hit her third home run of the season to left center to bring in three more runs to cap off the five-run first inning.
With two outs and runners on first and second in the top of the third, Henderson singled to left field and McCarty crossed the plate to go up 6-0.
Katelyn Steffel pinch hit for
Allayna Stolp and singled to right field to bring
Kayla Kostich across the plate and put UDM's total runs to seven.
Morehead State (8-6) scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Christa McGahuey came in to pitch in the seventh and closed the door to secure the win for UDM.
The Eagles came out swinging in the nightcap, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding a run in each of the next three innings. The Titans were held hitless until the top of the fourth when Severson singled up the middle with two outs. McGahuey plated Severson with a single up the middle for the Titans' only run of the game.
Anna Bondy pitched 2.1 innings in relief and did not allow a hit.
Detroit is now 3-17 on the year and will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to play five more games in the James Madison Invitational. Game one will be played on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. against Binghamton.
