HARRISONBURG, Va. (3/15/13) --
The University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its opening two games to Binghamton at the James Madison Invitational Friday afternoon at James Madison.

UDM (3-19) dropped game one to Binghamton (6-8) by a final tally of 9-3, and fell in game two, 7-0. Sara Cupp had a two-run home run over the right field fence in game one and Katy Severson combined to go 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored on the day.

In game one, the Bearcats came out swinging, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first on a double. Sara Cupp answered  with a two-run blast to right in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at two, but BU kept the pressure on, scoring three runs in the top of the second on a two-run triple and an RBI double to right center.

Detroit responded in the bottom of the second with Sam Henderson on third and two outs. Dani Holmes laid down a bunt that rolled to the pitcher, but the exchange between the pitcher and the catcher was bobbled, allowing Henderson to cross the plate and bring the score to 5-3.

The Titans would not get another hit in the game, and BU would plate four more runs in the top of the sixth to bring the score to 9-3.

Binghamton continued its scoring ways in the second game, scoring a run in both the first and second innings and three more in the bottom of the fourth.

After the Bearcats added a run in the bottom of the fifth, Allayna Stolp singled and Severson doubled to left field to put runners on second and third with one out. Cupp grounded out to third and Severson was picked off at second to spoil the Titans' best scoring chance of the game.

UDM will continue play at the JMU Invitational with a doubleheader on Saturday, taking on Fordham at 9:00 a.m., and host JMU at 1:00 p.m.
