HARRISONBURG, Va. (3/16/13) - The Detroit Titan softball team lost a shootout to Fordham , 18-8, in the first game of a split doubleheader Saturday at the JMU invitational in Harrisonburg, Va. The second game against James Madison was postponed due to rain and will be made up tomorrow.
UDM had a season-high 16 hits with
Katelyn Steffel leading the way with four hits and two RBI and
Sara Cupp went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
Fordham jumped on the board early with a run in the top of the first and five more in the second. Cupp lead off the bottom of the second with a home run to left field to give UDM its first run of the game. Steffel singled to right and advanced to third on an error to setup
Alyssa Schaub, who then singled through the right side to plate Steffel and put the score at 6-2 after two innings.
After a Fordham double to start the top of the third,
Julia Maksym retired the next three batters to leave the runner stranded at second. In the bottom half of the inning, Detroit had runners on second and third with no outs when Cupp ripped a double to left center to drive in two runs.
Sam Henderson then singled to put runners on first and third and another single by Steffel drove in
Samantha Wolschleger to get UDM within 6-5 after three.
The Rams added four runs in the top of the fourth on a pair of home runs and a two-run single. Detroit had runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom half of the inning when Steffel had another RBI single to make the score 10-6.
Fordham added three runs on two hits in the top of the fifth to extend its lead to 13-6, but Detroit got one back in the bottom half with an RBI single by Kostich.
The Rams would then score five runs in the top of the sixth on four hits to extend their lead to 18-7 before a 40 minute rain delay. When play resumed, UDM came out with a pair of singles and then Garcia doubled to right center to send another base runner across the plate, but UDM could not keep the rally going.
Detroit will face James Madison on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
