KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/6/13) – The UDM softball team fell to La Salle and Sacred Heart on Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Titans (2-14) struggled from the plate with only six hits in the two games and when they did have base runners they could not advance them, leaving 10 runners stranded on the base paths.
Allayna Stolp and Danni Holmes both had two hits in the 6-0 loss to La Salle (5-3) and
Kayla Kostich,
Hannah Klenk and
Sara Cupp were the only three to record hits in the 7-1 loss to Sacred Heart (3-16).
Detroit and Sacred Heart both went three-up-three-down in the first two innings. The Pioneers changed that in the bottom of the third with a single in third and then scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single. UDM responded when Kostich doubled in the top of the fifth.
Katy Severson advanced Kostich to third on a sacrifice bunt and Kostich scored on a throwing error by the shortstop to make it 2-1 in favor of Sacred Heart.
SHU responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to expand its lead to 7-1. The Pioneers defense stood stout, not allowing a Detroit base runner in the final two innings.
In the second game, the La Salle Explorers got on the board in the top of the first on a three-run home run and added another solo homer in the top of the second to take an early 4-0 lead. La Salle later added another run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single and one more in the top of the fifth on another solo home run.
UDM threatened in the bottom of the third with runners on second and third, but Cupp grounded out to third to end the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, two singles put runners on second and third with two outs but Klenk hit a hard line drive to the second baseman who caught it to end the game.
The Titans will rest for the next two days and then return to the field to finish the Rebel Games against North Dakota and St. Francis (Pa.) in Kissimmee, Fla. on Saturday.
