CANFIELD, Ohio (4/10/13) – The Detroit softball team came into today's game looking to take its first Horizon League series on the road, but a fine Penguins' pitching performance was the difference as UDM fell in the series finale, 8-0, against Youngstown State on Wednesday at McCune Park in Canfield, Ohio.
“We saw improvements over these last three games in all aspects of our game,” said head coach Liz Young. “We are focusing on learning the game and how to handle different situations and we are seeing that come alive on the field. Our pitching staff has committed to our philosophy and they are making adjustments and taking steps in the right direction.”
YSU (8-14; 3-3 HL) held the Titans (4-28; 1-5 HL) hitless and came out swinging in the rubber game, which began at 11:00 a.m., due to weather, as the Penguins scored four runs in the first inning.
Detroit came into the game looking to win the road series as it split a pair of games yesterday, earning a come-from-behind 4-2 win in the second game of the twinbill.
Kayla Kostich and
Sara Cupp each had two hits apiece in the win, with Kostich driving in two runs in the sixth inning with a double to put the red, white and blue ahead.
Detroit will return home when it hosts Loyola in a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
