DETROIT (3/14/13) – The Detroit softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader to Horizon League preseason number one Loyola on Sunday at Buysse Ballpark.
The Ramblers took game one by a score of 7-3 and took the second game, 12-0 (5 inn.).
Sara Cupp went 3-4 with two doubles in the two games and had a two-run home run in game one. In game one,
Anna Bondy pitched three innings in relief and allowed only one hit.
In game one, Loyola (19-13, 6-2 HL) started the top of the first with a home run to take an early one-run lead. UDM (4-32, 1-8 HL) answered when
Kayla Kostich singled to left field and Cupp homered over the center field fence to take a 2-1 lead.
The Ramblers answered with six runs in the next three innings to take a 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. Cupp doubled to left center and, after
Hannah Klenk pinch ran for Cupp,
Katelyn Steffel flied out to deep right field and Klenk was able to tag-up and cross the plate for the Titans third run of the day. UDM had two hits in the sixth and reached base twice in the bottom of the seventh, but both times Loyola spoiled the effort and forced Detroit to strand both runners on base both times.
Loyola scored 12 runs on 15 hits in game two and held the Titans to only one hit. LUC started out quickly, scoring five runs in the first two innings, and holding UDM hitless through three innings. With a runner on first in the bottom of the fourth, Cupp broke up the no-hitter with a double to left field, but a strikeout and a ground out left runners stranded on second and third.
The Titans will play a three-game series at Cleveland State with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday and a single game to be played on Thursday.
