Titans and Vikings Play Marathon Doubleheader

CLEVELAND (4/17/13) – The Detroit softball team dropped the first two games of a three-game series against Cleveland State on Wednesday night in Cleveland, Ohio.
 
The Titans lost game one, 8-7 (8 inn.) and fell in game two, 9-0 (5 inn.). Sara Cupp went 3-5 with three RBI and a run scored in game one and Kayla Kostich combined to go 3-5 with a run scored in both games.
 
After both teams were held scoreless in the first inning of game one, Kayla Kostich singled off the third baseman's glove to lead off the top of the second inning. Karyn McCarty doubled to right center and Kostich came around to score and give UDM the early lead 1-0. CSU answered with a run in the bottom of the second to go into the third tied.
 
To lead off the third, Katelyn Steffel walked and Sara Cupp hit her sixth home run of the year to take a 3-1 lead. In the top of the fourth with runners on first and second, Steffel singled to center field to plate Alyssa Gietl and extend the lead to three runs, 4-1. The Vikings threatened in the bottom of the fourth with a runner on third and two outs. Kostich made a diving save to her left and threw out the runner at first to end the inning.
 
The Vikings scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-RBI triple down the left field line to cut the Titans lead to 4-3. The Titans scored a run on an error in the ensuing inning to extend their lead to 5-3 going into the seventh inning.
 
Hoffman retired the first two batters in order, but with two outs CSU had four consecutive hits and scored two runs to tie the game at five and send the game into extra innings.
 
In the top of the eighth, Hoffman singled then advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Alyssa Schaub walked and then stole second base to put runners on second and third with no outs. Steffel flied out to right to bring Hoffman across the plate and Schaub to third. Cupp singled up the middle to plate Schaub and give UDM a two-run advantage going into the bottom of the eighth.
 
With runners on first and second and no outs,  Cleveland State hit a three-run walk-off home run to end the game that lasted three hours and 17 minutes.
 
CSU stayed hot going into the nightcap, hitting two home runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Titans tried to respond when Karyn McCarty doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but a groundout to third ended Detroit's early threat.
 
Detroit had back-to-back hits in the top of the third to put runners on the corners with two outs. The Vikings were able to force a groundout to second to escape the inning unharmed.
 
Cleveland State scored six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-0 lead after four innings.
 
The teams will continue the series with a single game to be played at Viking Field at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.
