CLEVELAND (4/18/13) -- The Detroit softball team took an early lead as
Kayla Kostich drove in
Alyssa Schaub on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first but four errors were too much to overcome in a 10-2 loss to Cleveland State in the final game of a three-game series on Thursday afternoon at Viking Field.
Kostich finished 2-2 with an RBI, a run scored, and a double, while
Katy Severson had a pinch-hit RBI in the top of the fourth to plate Detroit's second run of the game. The Titans had seven hits to Cleveland's eight, but four errors by UDM was the difference as CSU scored seven of its 10 runs as a result of an error.
In the top of the first Schaub reached base on an error by the short stop and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Sara Cupp singled to center field to put runners on first and third with one out. Kostich flied out to deep center field and Schaub was able to tag up and cross the plate to take an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first.
In the bottom of the inning, Cleveland State (15-18, 6-3 Horizon League) had a runner on third with one out. A failed sacrifice bunt was caught by Cupp at first base and she threw to third base to double-up the runner and escape the inning unharmed.
CSU added three runs in the second and the third innings to take a 6-1 lead after three innings.
In the top of the fourth, Kostich had a lead-off double to left field.
Christa McGahuey followed that with a single and advanced to second on an error to put runners on second and third with no outs. After a pair of ground outs, Severson came to the plate as a pinch-hitter and hit a ball to third base to bring in Kostich and cut the Viking lead to 6-2.
Cleveland State added four runs in the bottom of the fourth and a late two-out rally with back-to-back singles came to a close with the game concluding in five innings.
The Titans are now 4-35 (1-11 HL) and will return to Detroit to host Horizon League opponent Valparaiso in a two-day series on Saturday and Sunday at Buysse Ballpark. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and Sunday will be a 1:00 p.m. start.
