DETROIT (4/20/13) – The Detroit softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark. Valpo took game one, 12-1 (6 inn.), but the Titans came back to take the second game, 9-0 (5 inn.).
Kayla Kostich and
Alyssa Schaub both had home runs on the day and Kostich drove in four runs on the day. Detroit recorded 10 hits in game two and 10 Titans reached base in the nightcap.
In game two
Sara Cupp, Kostich and
Alyssa Gietl all recorded two hits with Kostich driving in three runs and
Katelyn Steffel had two RBI. Maksym earned her first win of the year, allowing three hits in five innings of work. The win marks the first time the Titans have defeated the Crusaders since a 12-10 victory in 2003.
In the second game,
Sara Cupp singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Kostich singled up the middle to bring both runs across the plate and give UDM an early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second with a runner on first and second and two outs, Steffel singled up the middle to plate Maksym and extend the lead to three runs.
Kostich led off the third inning with a home run to left center. With runners on first and second and one out,
Alyssa Gietl singled up the middle to send
Vanessa Garcia across the plate and Maksym singled to right to plate
Sam Henderson. Schaub doubled to center field to plate Gietl, and Cupp singled through the left side to score Schaub to cap off a six run third inning and give Detroit an 8-0 lead.
Maksym pitched two perfect innings to finish the game and give Detroit its fifth win of the season.
In game one Valparaiso hit a grand slam in the top of the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Schaub responded in the bottom half of the inning with a home run of her own to cut the lead to three runs.
Valpo added a run in both the fourth and fifth innings and then added six runs in the top of the sixth that included another grand slam, to bring the game to a final tally of 12-1.
Detroit is now 5-36 (2-12 HL) on the year and Valpo is now 22-20 (7-7 HL). The two teams will meet again on Sunday for a single game that will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Buysse Ballpark.
