HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. (4/28/2013) -- A historical season added another chapter to its legacy as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team won its second Horizon League championship, running away from the field to post a 20-shot victory at the Par 72, 5,817-yard Las Colinas Course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Detroit – who won its first title in 2010 – was tied for the lead after round one and then had a nine-shot lead after 36 holes before carding a 305 on Sunday to finish with a 920 (312-303-305), 20 shots ahead of Youngstown State (940) and 26 in front of Cleveland State (946).
“I am so happy for these ladies,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “They played great all year. We had about 11 rounds in the 70's and just everyone was a factor down here.”
The win gave the Titans the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Championships, their second trip to the NCAA's in school history. The win was also UDM's ninth on the season - in just 11 events - and those nine team titles also match the Titan all-time total coming into the 2012-13 campaign.
The Titans used a team effort in capturing its second title as four golfers earned a place on the All-Tournament Team by placing in the top seven.
Junior
Christina Thorne led that group taking third with a 229 (76-75-78), which included a 78 on Sunday. It was her first career All-Tournament honor and that was after being named All-Horizon League.
Junior
Lindsey Lammers – who won the event last year - was fourth finishing with a 230 (79-79-72) after carding an even-par 72 on the final 18. Her day included four birdies and 10 pars, and that came after she played the back nine yesterday to a 1-under performance.
“Lindsey might have had the most pressure coming down here, but she played well today to help win,” said Coach Ryan. “We all played as a team and we won as a team and that is the most important thing to Lindsey and to all of us.”
Sophomore
Olivia Richards claimed fifth with a 232 (77-74-81), while senior
Allison Sears shared sixth place with a 233 (81-75-77). Both players earned their first career All-Tournament honor. For Richards, it was her second-straight top-10 effort at the HL Championship, while Sears started the weekend eight over through eight holes, before putting it together with a nine over in her final 46.
Like Sears, senior
Collette Hansen was part of the 2010 championship team as she finished the event with a 78 on the final 18 holes, taking 16th with a 243 (80-85-78).
“We had one goal all year and that was a championship and we did that,” added Coach Ryan.
Detroit will now get ready to see what NCAA Regional it will be sent to with the three sites for 2013 set at Auburn (East) at the Auburn University Club, Oklahoma (Central) at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course and Stanford (West) at the Stanford Golf Course from May 9-11.
