DETROIT (4/5/2013) – The Detroit softball team opened Horizon League play with a pair of losses to UIC on Saturday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark.
Kayla Kostich combined to go 4-7 with three runs and a pair of RBI and
Katelyn Steffel went 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored in game two. UIC is now 12-19 (6-2 HL) and the Titans are now 3-26 (0-2 HL).
The Flames came out hot with a two-run home run in the top of the first and then a sacrifice fly to center in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
Kayla Kostich reached base on an error and would come around to score on a throwing error by UIC to put the tally at 3-1 after four innings.
UIC added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to bring the final score to 5-1.
Three Titans hit home runs with Steffel going 3-4 with three RBI and two runs and Kostich adding a pair of runs and RBI in the night cap.
The Flames continued their offensive assault in the second game, scoring seven runs in the first three innings. UDM scored a run in the bottom of the second when McCarty singled to left field to drive in Steffel. Kostich hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to bring the score to 7-3 after three innings, in favor of UIC.
Julia Maksym allowed one hit in the top halves of the fourth and fifth innings but allowed four runs in the top of the sixth as UIC stretched its lead to 11-3 after five and a half innings.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Sara Cupp led off with a single through the left side of the infield.
Samantha Wolschleger pinch ran for Cupp and advanced to second when Krista McGahuey was hit by a pitch and then to third on a single by Steffel.
Katy Severson flied out to center to plate Wolschleger and cut the deficit to 11-4 after six innings.
UIC responded by putting six runs on the board in the top of the seventh. Steffel responded with a three-run home run and
Karyn McCarty followed with a solo shot to bring the final score to 17-8.
UIC is now 12-19 (6-2 HL) and Detroit is 3-26 (0-2 HL). The two teams will finish the three-game series with a single game on Sunday at Buysse Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
