YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (4/9/13) – The Detroit Titans' softball team earned its first conference win as they split the doubleheader against Youngstown State on Tuesday at McCune Park, dropping the first game, 5-0, but taking the second game, 4-2.
Kayla Kostich drove in the go-ahead run in the second game to give
Kat Hoffman her second win of the year.
In the nightcap,
Kat Hoffman held YSU hitless in the first two innings, allowing only one runner to reach base on a fielding error. The Penguins scored two runs in the bottom of the third on three hits. An RBI single scored the first run and an error with the bases loaded allowed the second run to cross the plate.
In the top of the fifth, Hoffman led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Hoffman stole second and Kostich singled to right field to put runners on the corners with no outs. In Detroit's next at bat,
Sara Cupp hit a hard ground ball off the pitcher's leg that was corralled by the second baseman who was able to get Cupp at first, but not before Hoffman crossed the plate to give the red, white and blue its first run of the day. After a pitching change, a fielding error by Youngstown allowed another run to cross the plate and knot the game at two after five innings.
In the ensuing inning, YSU had a runner on first with one out when Kostich caught a line drive and fired to first to double-up the runner and get out of the inning unscathed.
Alyssa Gietl led-off the top of the sixth with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a ground out. After Hoffman walked to put runners on the corners, Kostich doubled to right field to bring two runners across the plate and give Detroit its first lead of the series, 4-2.
YSU singled to begin the sixth and then a two-out double down the right field line put runners on second and third with two outs. Hoffman forced a fly out to leave both runners stranded and secure the lead for UDM.
In game one, Youngstown State was threatening in the first four innings, but
Julia Maksym was able to strand six base runners, including escaping a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth. The Penguins finally scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning and added two more in the bottom of the sixth on a single and a double to bring the final score of game one to 5-0.
The Titans improve to 4-28 (1-4 HL) and will finish the series with Youngstown (7-14, 2-2 HL) on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.
